Information for pregnant and parenting students

St. Ambrose University supports the academic success of all students. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 ("Title IX"), 20 U.S.C. §1681 et seq., is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex-including pregnancy and parental status-in educational programs and activities.

Accommodations

Students may request accommodations during pregnancy, after childbirth, or for other related conditions. Accommodations are tailored to each student and as such they will vary from student to student. Some examples of potential accommodations include:

Excused absences due to pregnancy, or related conditions deemed medically necessary by a doctor.
Flexible deadlines for work submissions.
Rescheduling of tests and exams.
Providing reasonable physical accommodations.
Providing alternatives to make up missed work.
A return to the same academic or extracurricular status.

Accommodations for students originate through the Accessibility Resource Center (ARC). It is the student's responsibility to contact ARC and initiate the conversation. Employees should arrange accommodations through Human Resources (HR).

Lactation rooms

Lactation rooms are available on the main campus (Bride's Room in the Chapel).

Filing a complaint

If you believe St. Ambrose is discriminating against you because you are pregnant or parenting you may file a complaint:

First, using St. Ambrose's internal Title IX grievance procedures. If the school fails to address your concerns, you may consider:
With the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR). If you file with OCR, make sure you do so within 180 days of when the discrimination took place.
